Scripting History on the Highest Peaks Driven. Focused. Motivated. 23 year old Nungshi and Tashi Malik are on a journey that is beyond the ordinary. Known for being the first twins to climb Mt Everest, the twin sisters are not resting on their laurels – these girls are busy creating history. For these natives of Dehradun, their love for mountaineering began while at school in the hill-station of Mussoorie. In the summer after they graduated from high-school, their father Col V.S. Malik had them enrolled at a course at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) in Uttarkashi. Those summer climbs left them craving more, and it wasn’t long before these talented young girls were breezing through the advanced mountaineering course at NIM. From scaling the Gangotri glacier, to summiting Mt Kilimanjaro it wasn’t long before they set their sights on the world’s tallest peak. Mt. Everest was incredibly arduous and perilous climb, but it also cast a spell. “The thrill of mountaineering is hard to put into words. Having conquered the highest peak in the world, we asked ourselves, “What next?”—that’s when we set forth to trek the highest peaks of seven continents”, says Nungshi. #Mission2For7 Already local heroes in their hometown, the girls wanted to use their celebrity status for something greater. As Tashi says, “The average Indian woman has to deal with incredible pressures. It’s ironic that two young girls like us can feel so empowered to achieve whatever we set our hearts on, but large numbers of women in India still battle against female feticide, gender inequality, and physical abuse. We wanted a platform that would raise awareness about these issues, and that’s when we came up with the idea of Mission2For7. By conquering tallest peaks in each of the seven continents, we want to break the stereotypes about women and raise awareness about female feticide.” Having summited Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Everest, they went on to conquer Mt. Elbrus (Europe), Mt. Aconcagua (South America), Mt. Carstenz Pyramid in Papua New Guinea (Greater Australia), Mt. McKinley (North America) and are now on their way to Mt. Vinson Massif (Antarctica). With a strong belief in the empowerment of women, the twin sisters seek to raise concerns for the rights of girl child.
