Sculptor Ann Christopher has urged visitors to find their favourite piece of artwork when they visit the Crucible2 exhibition. Ann, a member of the Royal Academy, is among 61 artists displaying their work at the contemporary sculpture exhibition, which will run from 1st September to 31st October. In a new video, she admitted that she is looking forward to seeing the modern pieces in a historical setting like Gloucester Cathedral. You can see the video at the Crucible2 Facebook page: facebook/crucible2.sculpture Ann, who lives and works near Bath, said: “The Cathedral is not an art gallery and not a home, but something between the two. It is quite interesting seeing these pieces in an historical architectural setting. Sometimes they complement each other and sometimes they fight, but that is what makes it interesting. “Gloucester Cathedral has got a lot of sculpture within it already; the trick is to find the pieces which are temporary. Sometimes it is obvious and sometimes you have to search, which is part of the fun. “There will be a very varied selection of artists’ work, so there is going to be something for everyone to respond to. Just find your favourite – don’t be afraid to keep looking.” Ann, who was elected Royal West of England Academician in 1983 and Royal Academician in 1989, has displayed work around the world. She was made Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1992. Recent large commissions include a 3.3m bronze for a private house in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and a 5.2m corten steel sculpture for Crest Nicholson in Portishead in 2000. Her work is in many private and public collections, including the University of Bristol, the City of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, the Chantrey Bequest, the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and has also been acquired by the Contemporary Art Society. Crucible2 will display 100 sculptures placed throughout the cathedral and its grounds, setting these modern pieces of art against a magnificent historical building. Hundreds of thousands of people visited the first Crucible in 2010 and this event is set to be even bigger and better. Crucible2 is jointly organised by Gloucester Cathedral and Gallery Pangolin and will be completely free of charge, so everyone can enjoy and experience some of the most exceptional sculpture produced in the past 50 years.
