Why this month of resistance is necessary: Tens of millions of people have to live their lives enmeshed in the criminal “injustice” system of this country. 2.2 million people warehoused in prison, and this doesn’t count the hundreds of thousands of immigrants swept up in raids that tear families apart and disappear people, who are held in detention and face deportation. Five million formerly incarcerated people who are openly discriminated against in employment, housing and in other ways. And countless millions who of people have become permanent suspects when dealing with cops and courts and are treated as guilty until proven innocent, if they can survive to prove their innocence. This amounts to a slow genocide that is crushing the bodies and breaking the spirits of countless millions of people. This is unacceptable. It is illegitimate, and it must be stopped! Many more people are seeing mass incarceration as a serious problem, and that’s good. But not enough people are acting to stop this problem. The Stop Mass Incarceration Network (SMIN) has called for a Month of Resistance to Mass Incarceration aimed at taking resistance to this horror to a whole new level. You are needed to be part of making October powerful enough to change everything around mass incarceration.
