Seabreeze Beach Hotel Fishing Club Monthly Competition – 1st & 2nd February 2014 The Seabreeze Beach Hotel Fishing Club’s monthly outing and get together was held over the weekend of 1st & 2nd February with conditions best described as ideal with clear skies, good tides and approachable sea conditions. There were 112 nominations for the event and by the crowd it seems they were all there for the weigh-in and barbecue. A total of 78.4 kg of fish was presented to the Weigh Master. Despite the ideal conditions the fishing was a bit patchy with a lot of water between the fish especially for the outside anglers. Perhaps, by sheer weight of numbers, the inside section was quite productive with all sections of the result sheet being filled. There was a good contingent of junior anglers in attendance and generally the prizes were spread around the competitors as the results show. Inside – the results of the seniors and ladies section were very much shared around. Bream – senior – Ian Knox, 1.015 kg; lady – Ethel Rowsell, 730 gms. Dusky Flathead – senior – Peter Caldon, 2.290 kg; lady – Cheryl Barber, 785 gms. Whiting – senior – Bob Wright, 295 gms; lady – Joy Ashley, 280 gms. Largest Other – Mulloway – Cheryl Barber, 4.160 kg. Angler of the Month – Pat Halverson with 4 species. Although there were plenty of juniors in the competition, Max Mansfield dominated the results with a clean sweep of the boy’s section. His results: Bream, 350 gms, Dusky Flathead, 335 gms, Whiting, 240 gms, Dart, 290 gms and Junior Angler of the Month with 4 species, well done Max. There was a bit of competition between the girls with Erin Cook’s Dusky Flathead, 350 gms and Whiting, 230 gms being winners while Tiana Gee got the Bream with a 450 gms specimen. Outside – as mentioned the fishing was patchy, so much so that in the Pearl Perch and Snapper sections, Narelle Bunt’s 865 gms Snapper was the only winner. Luckily the pelagic fish were a little more co-operative. Bruce Rowsell took out the seniors Spotted Mackerel with a 6.090 kg specimen, while Narelle Bunt’s 5.075 kg fish was the ladies winner. The Cook family were out on the briny over the weekend and the kids brought home the winners. Brayden Cook won with a 4.985 kg Spotted Mackerel while his sister Erin weighed in a winning 6.130 kg Spotted Mackerel. Young Erin demonstrated a bit of versatility taking out prizes in both the inside and outside sections. A 7.660 kg Spanish Mackerel gave Col Barber the largest other prize. This fish combined with the four “Spotties” mentioned earlier made up almost half of the gross weight for the weekend. Narelle Bunt was Outside Angler of the Month with 5 species while Erin Cook was Junior Angler of the Month. Hopefully the next competition, to be held on the weekend of 1st & 2nd March, will be similarly blessed weather wise and generate as much interest and competition as this month’s did. Outside of the fishing results there were a number of other aspects to our presentation afternoon. There was a fund raising event for the Royal Far West Children’s’ Charity, at the Hotel, and the $400.00 proceeds of our fish raffle went to this cause. Also Club President, Barry Arigho, presented a cheque for $500.00 to the South West Rocks Dragon Boat Club President, Sue Anfield, to assist them with the purchase of a new dragon boat. The Club also announced having received a grant of $4,350.00 from NSW Fisheries for a Club initiated Habitat Regeneration Project in an area adjacent to the wall of the Macleay River. This project will get under way in the near future. Kim Hogno Publicity.
