Sean Ford reports in todays Advocate that the Mount Bischoff tin mine work could be revived: The long story of the Mount Bischoff tin mine may not be over yet. The site, near Waratah, was last mined in 2011. Its history goes back to the 1870s. A joint venture company is awaiting results from a diamond drilling program at a Mount Bischoff target known as North Summit. “While the mine remains on care and maintenance, significant resources remain at depth and numerous historically mined areas remain under-explored,” Rension mine half-owner Metals X Limited said in its 2012-13 annual report. Geophysical programs during the year defined conceptual targets. Mount Bischoff is about 80km north of the Renison tin mine, which is run by the Bluestone Mines Tasmania Joint Venture. Perth-based Metals X has a 50 per cent share and the rest is held by YT Parksong Australia Holding, a partnership between China’s biggest tin producer, Yunnan Tin, and Hong Kong-based L’Sea Resources. According to online minerals database Mindat, the Mount Bischoff resources were discovered in 1877 by explorer and prospector James “Philosopher” Smith. “Mount Bischoff was the first major mineral resource developed in Tasmania, with a total production of around 62,000 tonnes of metallic tin,” the website says. “The discovery provided the impetus for exploration of other areas of the West Coast and the discovery of other mining areas such as Mount Lyell and Renison.”
