Search Strongs Hebrew Dictionary for threshold and you land at H5592 - saph - (1) basin, goblet; (2) threshold, sill Why is it described as a container? First we pause to consider that across ancient middle Eastern cultures (including Egypt), that the threshold (cup) of a door (Messiah is the Door of the Fathers kingdom) was a place where covenants were made. The rules of a house, and the laws of a city (the terms) were displayed at the doors and gates, respectively. Traditionally, covenants were made, sealed or ratified by the sacrifice of animals, i.e., the shedding of blood. Thus, when someone comes to your house, an animal, perhaps a lamb, would be sacrificed at the door. Accordingly, the threshold (goblet, cup) would receive the blood, acting as an altar. The covenant was confirmed when the guest stepped over the blood and into the house. Among other things, the covenant bound the guests in agreement to honor the rules of the house. In light of these descriptions, what is the essence of the Messiahs invitation to the disciples to partake of His cup and accept His terms and become an accepted guest of the house / kingdom? This CUP is the NEW COVENANT in My BLOOD [which was poured upon the threshold, place of entrance, itself acting as an altar], which is shed for you. ( LUKE 22: 20 )
