Search for the inconspicuous in this world. Be surprised. Countless living things exist which some human eyes will never see. Everyone has a story. We all like surprises, here’s another: Bird’s nest fungus, the sphere thrower. Yes, it throws spheres. Call them spores. Birds nest fungus are miniatures. Four or five would fit on a penny. Each fungus resembles an extreme small-scale birds nest. In each “nest” are four to five peridioles (spores). Fungus reproduce by spores. Birds nest spores fly. No wings, but they fly. When a drop of rain hits the nest these peridioles or spores can “fly” up to a yard from the nest. Make that three feet! The spores then stick to what they land on. Inconspicuous, miniscule, but significant in all life. But no glory. Silently, unnoticed this little fungus cycles nutrients, enriches soil, and contributes to human well being. No glory needed, totally amazing. We live in a wonderful world.
