Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression which generally surfaces during the colder darker months of the year. It results from a lack of sunlight and daytime light. Although not as common in the southern hemisphere it is said to effect about 5% of the population. It can cause a loss in energy and concentration levels, a foggy head, changes in appetite, carbohydrate cravings often resulting in weight gain, moodiness, anxiety, fatigue, and overall SADNESS. Treatment for S.A.D. is similar to that of other types of depression and your doctor may choose to treat you with antidepressants. From a holistic kinesiology approach we look at the underlying factors to establish the cause of the condition, including emotional stress, movement, hormone imbalances, adrenal stress, blood sugar imbalances, and vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
