Second Empowering Vanua Malagwelo workshop a success During the first two weeks of April, the Vanuatu Red Cross held the second in its series of Empowering Vanua Malagwelo workshops. These workshops are aimed at providing life skills to young girls between the ages of 15-17 who are no longer enrolled in formal education. This second workshop invited girls from Pango, Mele & Erakor to participate in a two week course covering varied subjects such as sewing, cooking, computers and reproductive health among others. The workshop organisers received an overwhelmingly positive response from the girls who participated with many suggesting that the workshop run for a full month next time. To make the workshop possible, Vanuatu Red Cross brought together 20 skilled female trainers and guest speakers with varied expertise to facilitate the training and to make sure that the participants were exposed to a wide variety of subjects. It is the hope of the Empowering Vanua Malagwelo project team that the girls find some areas within the training that they would like to pursue further or some information that they will find useful in their lives. Funded by the Swiss Embassy in Canberra, the project will run two further workshops this year. The next workshop will invite girls from the Epau area of Efate to participate and is due to start on the 9th of June.
