Second Helping of Thanksgiving Dec 1st 2013 Short one folks, because Im sure Im keeping you away from football, leftover turkey and Christmas shopping. Ive been over the debate a thousand times about saying X-Mas versus Christmas. Its Christmas. But for me that also applies to Thanksgiving. Im sorry, but I will never call it Turkey Day. Thats not what its about. Its not what its for. The idea is simply to give thanks for all that we have. Im not saying that people cant call it Turkey Day and still take it seriously. Its just that in this pedants mind you begin to lose the spirit of something when you start to give it nicknames. The day could seriously come when more people call it Turkey Day and we lose sight of why we are overdosing on tryptophan every year. Take a look around at all that you have. Your family, your home, your keepsakes. Think about the freedom you enjoy and the ability that you have to rise above adversity to do great things. Dont think so much about the meal but think about perhaps a day when you couldnt afford that meal. Think about times when you didnt have the family and friends around you. Enjoy the bounty but appreciate it as well. And the same goes for the Christmas shopping that follows. If you want to make a tradition out of camping in front of Best Buy to save fifty dollars on a big screen tv, thats okay, but dont trample people to get it. Appreciate the fact that you are able to do something nice for yourself or your loved ones and let the other people get the same chance. If the material thing that you are focusing on becomes more important than the people around you (even the strangers standing in line with you) then you have truly missed the entire point, and no gadget will ever truly make you happy. Again, enjoy the bounty but appreciate it also.
