Second Post on sketching supplies... pencils (and erasers). You have the sketchbook, the first step for new sketchers is to stick to basics and thats pretty much using a pencil or pen, but there are many new items out on the market for those of us that have been around the block a few times, too. Pencils are your most basic sketch tool. You can use a mechanical pencil #2 pencil or those old fashioned Yellow Ticonderogas that are pretty much the image everyone thinks of when you think pencil. (I LOVE Ticonderogas, I have some in my drawer in my studio.) There are Faber- Castells, the Generals that they sell in Michaels, etc. I prefer two brands of pencil, the Staedtler pencil and the reincarnated and revamped Blackwing 602 Palomino which is a heavenly pencil to work with. The old Eberhard-Faber Blackwing 602s were the pencil of choice for Disney and Warner Brothers cartoonists and the company went out of business a few years ago and artists have been hounding the manufacturer to bring them back. They were paying big $$ for the pencils that were still out there. If you want to try a Blackwing 602 Palomino, LuAnn sells them at Bellport Arts & Framing Studio on Main Street in Bellport and I recommend you give them a try. They also have a nice eraser on them with is the perfect segue into erasers.....you should always carry a kneadable eraser in your sketch gear, you never know when youll need it and you can get them locally at Michaels or AC Moore. (For those of you reading this and are not on Long Island, the closest true art supply store, Dick Blicks, is almost an hour away) Yes, a pencil can actually make a difference. palominobrands/blackwing-pencil-story/
