Second annual Smiley ‘Library Days’ will focus on City’s 125th The A.K. Smiley Public Library will present its second annual “Library Days,” celebration, thanks to a grant from Environmental Systems Research Institute, on June 14 and 15 at the Smiley Library, 125 W. Vine St. This year’s theme will focus on the 125th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Redlands in 1888. “Since the City is celebrating its quasquicentennial, and our vital Friends of the Library support group is marking its 40th anniversary, the theme seemed appropriate,” observed Smiley Library Director Don McCue. The event begins Friday, June 14, with the “Guess Where” game, a self-guided discovery experience about the Library. Interested players can get the game at the Circulation Desk. On Saturday, June 15, a variety of interesting events are planned from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. From 10 a.m. to noon, Archivist Nathan Gonzales will reprise last year’s highly-successful showing of historic films about Redlands, once again replete with freshly-popped popcorn. From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the children’s garden, younger patrons will have the opportunity to assist noted children’s craft expert Didi Pelev assemble a 3-D paper 125th birthday cake for the City of Redlands. At 11 a.m. in the Heritage Room Gonzales will conduct a special reading of the classic Redlands book “Two Girls in the Kite” for children. The Armory Band will perform a variety of 19th century musical pieces from noon to 1 p.m. in the adjacent Smiley Park. Bring a chair or blanket and a picnic lunch to enjoy the concert with your whole family. Last, but not least, historians Ann Deegan and Maria Carrillo will offer a sneak preview of their forthcoming book about early Redlands photographers in the Assembly Room at 1 p.m. Throughout the day Friends of the Library members will serve lemonade and cookies, and have also arranged a special book sale in Smiley Park. “We hope the Library’s patrons can join us for what should be a memorable event,” said McCue.
