Second decade gratitude challenge. When I was 9 or so, we moved to 16 Beverly Drive in San Carlos and I lived there until I headed out to Pomona College. Lots of things going on in my life in this decade. Sadly, my mom died in 1966 (I was 14) and both of my remaining grandparents passed shortly thereafter. But still, much to be thankful for (much more than Ill be able to include here). - I loved growing up in San Carlos. I could walk to all of my schools and downtown to the library. We could even catch a bus to the mall. We had a little store a couple of blocks away where we could get milk and bread. It also had a whole wall of penny candy :-) The high school had a pool where I took and later taught swimming lessons. I took tennis lessons at the high school tennis courts. Up the hill from our backyard was a huge oak tree (probably several hundred years old) and we often saw deer and quail. - I am forever thankful for Mrs Kidd, the choir teacher at the Methodist Church. I sang with her from 3rd through high school. She probably wasnt more than 5 feet tall but she LOVED singing and passed along that love, along with many valuable singing techniques, to all of her students. My dad built her a box to stand on so we could all see her when she was directing. She sang the Lords Prayer at my moms memorial service. - Thankful to a very old lady I met in the park one day. I was struggling with losing my mom and my grandparents and really couldnt get any comfort from religion. She told me she was old and probably wasnt going to live any longer but she was ready to go because she knew that her children and grandchildren knew what was right and wrong and would carry on for her. So I decided to make things in honor of my mother, bake bread in honor of my grandmother, and tell stories in honor of my grandfather. It was SUCH a comfort to me. - Thankful to Mr. Bert Niehuis (sp?), who made math fun and had a knack for describing difficult concepts in easy to understand terms. For example, he explained the concept of limits by saying, Image you are 4 feet from a wall. You take a step halfway there. Then another step halfway across the remaining distance. Continue doing this. Pretty soon your nose hits the wall and you cant go any further. Never forgot that! - Thankful to my uncle, Bob Kauk, for setting me up to tutor math students. Not only did I earn some spending money, but I discovered I really enjoyed helping people learn things. When I came back from college one Christmas, I met one of my former students in the grocery store. He had a big grin on his face and told me hed gotten a B in math that first semester. Made me proud. Thats enough for FB :-)
