Secondary Survey , unconscious but breathing casualty Top-To-Toe Survey Start with the head, fingers through the hair, feeling for bumps and indents, looking for blood possible head injury. Look into the eyes for blood and equal pupil size. Look in the ears for blood, possible ruptured ear drum, watery blood would be Skull fracture. Look in the mouth and up the nose for blood, watery blood from the nose could indicate a possible skull fracture. Feel round the back of the neck for disfigurement, possible broken bones. Feel across the shoulders and collar bones for disfigurement, looking for medical medallion to indicate any condition. Feel across chest area for a male, around chest area for female, feel down sides of torso, rib area for disfigurement, under lower back area as far as possible , press down on abdominal area for softness, if its hard, this could indicate internal bleeding. Next is the hips, hold both sides and gently rock the hips for unusual movement, any crunching or knocking could indicate broken hips. Then the arms , looking for any brakes, cuts, bruises, bracelets for any medical conditions, even signs of drug use for possible overdose. Then the legs, looking for brakes , disfigurement, cuts, bruises. When all this has been carried out , place the casualty in the Recovery Position, then check the spine for any disfigurement, all of this will help you make an assessment for when Professional Medical Help arrives.
