The first instinct of security professionals may be to deny mobile devices access to sensitive data, but Websenses Alexander Watson says this simply drives employees to find workarounds, creating any even worse security threat. Instead, data security strategies should be adopted that enable rather than hobble mobile working. A number of new technologies and services are helping to make this easier. Strong authentication is crucial to secure data being used by mobile devices, and many mobile devices are adopting stronger authentication technology. Apple has started moving forward on biometrics in mobile devices by adding a fingerprint scanner to its latest iPhone, and other devices are able to interact with government CAC and PIV cards for authentication purposes. Data loss prevention also is crucial and can be handled through software such as the Trusted Execution Environment. Dedicated hardware also can be built into mobile devices that allow for a secure work and communication environment.
