Secretary Shinseki’s resignation today is a welcome – and long overdue – demonstration that the government is accountable for keeping faith with our veterans. His departure is also an opportunity for us to focus immediately and intensely on remedying the culture and problems at some VA medical facilities. But Secretary Shinseki’s resignation should not diminish our gratitude for his service to our country as a military hero who also made important reforms on behalf of veterans. We need to remember that Congress itself created many of the VA’s problems long before Secretary Shinseki’s confirmation. I look forward to working to ensure that the full audit of VA facilities, including those here in Connecticut, is swift and transparent. And I urge any veteran who has experienced or is experiencing unacceptable delays or inadequate care at a VA medical facility to contact my office.
