Secrets for staying warm in winter and still riding.......1. When you have all your warm layers on in the car on the way to the barn do NOT turn much heat on - if you crank up the heat with all the layers on you will be freezing when you step outside. 2. Invest in good socks, winter breeches, under armor shirts etc. Vests are great. 3. I love wind pants. I get mens and usually a size larger than I wear - and I keep them over my breeches until I am ready to get on. Then I pull them off ( they usually have a zipper at bottom so will fit over most shoes ) , ride, then put back on - keeps warm air in, any breeze out. 4. Carheart coats are great - and vests ......5. Invest in good socks. 6. Winter riding boots available at your local tackshop. I personally dont like the bulk - so will use my normal riding boots but then as soon as I get off I put on my Muck Boot or Bogs boots ( rubber lined boots ) they are so warm my feet sweat. 7. Gloves are super important . If you just wear cotton gloves- the wind you create when you ride goes right through them......Get something with a leather outer - or there is a glove that is Scuba material ( neoprene ) that I love because its thinner and tight - very warm. 8. Small children or people with poor circulation might need the shake up hand heaters in gloves. 9. STAY MOVING when you get to barn. Dont stop and chat ( make a date with other boarders at a restaurant in the warm to chat !! ) ...put some muscle into grooming and keep fingers / toes wiggling as you groom........ 10. In our area - we dont get many days of super cold weather ( highs in teens ) .......horses handle cold really well......you can ride here all winter and your horse will be so much better for spring show season !
