Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Linden Citywide Shutdown - TopicsExpress

Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Linden Citywide Shutdown January 23, 2014 From the United States Embassy Georgetown, Guyana U.S. citizens are advised that the citizens of Linden plan a citywide shutdown on January 25, 2014. This shutdown coincides with the planned visit of the President of Guyana to Linden and is in response to the government’s handling of the August 2012 Linden protest. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations. Traffic delays, road blocks and increased military or police presence is expected during the Linden citywide shutdown and Guyanese President’s visit. We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Guyana enroll in the Department of States Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at https://step.state.gov/step. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy to contact you in an emergency. If you dont have Internet access, enroll directly with the U.S. Embassy.
