Security boss calls workers “baboons” WRITTEN BY FLORIS STEENKAMP THURSDAY, 16 JANUARY 2014 08:04 Discontent is brewing at the Swakopmund branch of Rubicon Security between security staff and coastal area manager Johan Viljoen, whom some personnel allege subjects them to frequent bouts of degrading verbal abuse, threats and unfair treatment. In a letter addressed by certain staff members to the proprietors of Rubicon Security Services in Tsumeb, Martin van den Berg and Christo Groenewald, allegations are levelled against Viljoen. Viljoen allegedly refused some employees use of ablution facilities on the premises of the company in Swakopmund on 20 December last year. He allegedly instead broke out into a tirade calling them “stinking people” and said they can “urinate in the streets like monkeys”. In the letter it is stated Viljoen shouts at staff members, allegedly does not follow labour legislation when he dismisses people, and has at occasions threatened workers and degraded them with phrases like “stink people from the DRC” [settlement], “monkeys” or “baboons”. One of the proprietors of the business, Christo Groenewald, confirmed knowledge of the written complaints against Viljoen. Groenewald further confirmed an internal inquiry against Viljoen started in Swakopmund yesterday, but felt it premature to make any further comments in the absence of any official finding. When Viljoen was approached over the matter, he too confirmed knowledge of the allegations against him that calls for his removal from office.
