Security in Old City beefed up ahead of Ramzan, Bonalu HYDERABAD: With around a fortnight left for the month of Ramzan to begin, police have already started taking measures to avoid any untoward incident in the South zone. Police said beefing up of security is also on account of Bonalu celebration which are scheduled to begin at various temples in the Old City from July 26 to August 5. Incidentally, Shab-e-Qadr, during which devout in large numbers flock to mosques to engage in acts of worship throughout the night, too is likely to be observed on the intervening night of August 5 and August 6. "Taraweeh prayers (special prayers offered at night) are offered in mosques across the South Zone. Around the same time, the Bonalu procession too will be moving from Nagulchinta, which is a pressure point, via Charminar near the Bhagyalakshmi Temple and will move onwards to the Musi river. We will engage with community elders to ensure that things go smoothly," said a police officer. The return route from the banks of River Musi was likely to be changed so as to avoid any troublesome events, he added. Anti-sabotage checks will begin at public places like parking spaces, temples and mosques on key routes. Checking of vehicles, persons and lodges has also been planned. Security agencies will strengthen the existing 45 pickets in the South Zone by increasing their size and later by increasing the number of pickets in the area. Police personnel will also be deployed at various temples and mosques for security reasons. Routes leading to main roads at points such as Naghulchinta, Haribowli, Rajesh Medical Hall, Moghalpura Kaman, and SardarMahal will be barricaded so as to regulate the movement of traffic and people. "We will involve elders of both communities including people from temple and mosque committees to cooperate with us and to be accommodative as there is an overlap of Ramzan and Bonalu after 33 years. We have planned for dedicated routes for the processions. Additional forces will be called for eventually," said DCP (South) Dr Tarun Joshi. He added that an inter-department meeting to discuss arrangements would be held soon.
