See the link for the basic requirements of running a legitimate association in Australia, see the different categories to determine how yours should run. At the very least your association should be registered with ASIC for all of the years it has existed and your membership fees should be payable to that association name, and receipts provided, as well as the membership having a basic say in how those funds are spent and receive yearly audited financials of the association and vote on who is on their committee or board. Board minutes and upcoming meeting agendas should be posted -where members can see it - as should any upcoming change to rules of the group, rules which should be voted upon and notified before being forwarded, seconded, and then that motion carried. Being a member means being active, not passive and being willing to scrutinise your leadership, and not being called difficult or acrimonious for exercising your right as a member to require transparency of how it all runs. I often listen far more to the substance and reasons of the person speaking, and with discernment, rather than just taking what they say as gospel because they seem nice. Plenty of nice people speak and might not have a clue what they are talking about. I recommend discernment and logical, critical thinking to everyone. Its pure gold. From the Australian Securities and Investment Commissions own website :- Basically an incorporated association may need to: have a committee, responsible for managing the association have a public officer and notify any changes in that position have a registered office in its state of incorporation act in accordance with its objects and rules hold an annual general meeting once every calendar year lodge an annual statement every year keep proper accounting records and, in some states, prepare, have audited and lodge financial statements keep minutes of all committee and general meetings. keep registers of members and all committee members have a common seal. For more information about incorporating an association and post-incorporation obligations, visit the website of the relevant state or territory authority.
