Mastering audio is distinct from mixing because the engineer will predominantly be working with the stereo mixdown that has been provided by the client (Ideally a .WAV or .AIFF file at 24-bit resolution).It’s absolutely critical that your final mix be as good as you can possibly achieve before sending off for mastering. As the old saying goes, “You can polish a turd, but in the end, it’s still a turd”. Mastering will not make a bad mix sound like a million bucks. Mastering does not “traditionally” have the flexibility of a multi-track mixing session and is more like adding the icing on the cake of a well produced musical mix.
