Seecharan and Etwarrea - Finale In my after-life I will be a mule for a while and after that, a woman, said Seecharan. There was a madness that seized Seecharan. He stumbled from the peerhah he was sitting on as he lurched towards Etwarrea who let out an almighty ear shattering scream to make anyones blood curdle. He grabbed her by the right arm as the cutlass rapidly descended in two swift and brutal blows severing her left arm below the elbow. Etwarrea continued screaming and which only escalated to a heightened frenzy when Seecharan threw the severed and bloody arm into her face shouting out apa vesya la ki - take that you harlot. Etwarrea ran, still screaming with her husband giving chase, but as she collapsed on the ground, blood pouring from her severed arteries, Seecharan stopped, turned around and went back to his abode. He threw his bloodied cutlass on the floor, picked up his shovel, locked the door and went to work aback of the estate. Etwarrea was in a state when she arrived at the plantation hospital, her helpers frantic with fear and anxiety for her well-being. The district medical officer was sent for and after a quick assessment of the sustained injury made a determination to amputate the remaining stump above the elbow. By this time Etwarrea had lost a great deal of blood. She died two days later but not before the district magistrate took her dying deposition. Seecharan bhai was arrested and was confronted with his victim. He was remorseless and devoid of emotion. His trial and conviction was a mere formality and the date of his execution was fixed. The Governor in Council refused to interfere in his sentence, so Henry my friend, who was Sheriff of the County of Demerara at the time, received the Governors warrant for the execution. Henry visited Seecharan in gaol and asked if there was anything he could do for him like writing to relatives in India, No he replied. Seecharan seemed very calm and self-possessed that Henry asked what would become of him after he died, to which he replied, I would become a mule for some years. And after that? Henry asked.Oh, then he replied, I will become a woman. The next morning at precisely 9 oclock Henry read the death warrant to Seecharan. He then calmly walked to the scaffold, the cap pulled over his head and the noose placed around his neck. Henry gave the signal, the drop down fell and Seecharan was launched into oblivion and went on to solve the mystery of transmigration. The end.
