Seeding the world. I know I have organic farming and gardening - TopicsExpress

Seeding the world. I know I have organic farming and gardening friends island wide who might want to know how they can take action themselves in saving seeds and our food source. This might be an opportunity for our people in Hawaii to be a big part of this. I have been approached by an amazing woman who started an organization based on saving seeds and the valuable food sources. A problem for the organization is, they have a small window of the year when they can grow these seeds. I mentioned in Hawai`i, we can grow our food year round. She wants to send me seeds to see if we can grow it for our islands but also to help replenish their seeds and mission, I look at it as a wonderful opportunity for kanaka Hawai`i to take an active roll in mitigating world hunger and promoting more diverse food seeds our community can grow island wide. We can expand on this idea to be island wide but their is an issue of cross contamination from gmos for foods such as corn so we would want to concentrate that type of seeds in areas where gm corn is not grown. I am thinking we can easily be a part of this if you, have a yard, garden bed, or even in pots for other herbs and seeds. The most important thing would be to eat the food it provides but also become a seed source for this organization. There are some geographical environmental issues to look at such as climatizing these seeds to the tropics then trying to send them back to Turtle Island, what we call the mainland. because they might be more geared to the tropics. It cant hurt to try but also maybe we would come up with some strains of plants that are better suited for growing in the tropics and their organization as well as our cooperative of farmers, gardeners, and friends can share with others where the seeds will be suited by regions. I want to promote exchanging seeds, growing them and saving some for the future. You do not need to have a big yard, or a big inventory of plant seeds. Even if you try one variety of broccoli and share seeds back, it would be great. The most important thing is, we will be saving these seeds for future generations, we would be less reliant on foreign imported food, we would be promoting and inspiring people to grow their own food which we already do, we would be safer if the barges do not come in, we would be building communities to be more independent together, we would be more independent ourselves because seed sovereignty is individual sovereignty, we could have educational workshops in our areas to promote how and why it is important, we would be helping to restore native and possibly endangered seeds, we would possibly in the future become a seed bank in case of environmental disasters around the world that could devastate seeds and plants, we would be taking an active roll in preserving humanity through our bellies. I dont know...Im just throwing this out there. Maybe this is just a conversation we could build on. If you are interested, chime in.
