Seeds are the mothers of the earth said indigenous leader at the third day of the Caravan for Seed and Food Sovereignty - 2014 in Sri Lanka. Third day of the caravan starts in Kandy today. A protest held near the Peradeniya University with participation of the university students. Street drama performed and leaflets were distributed. The policy proposals handed over to Director General of Agriculture at the Department of Agriculture in Peradeniya. The main event in Kandy held near the market complex after a protest march held with the participation of members of peoples organizations in Central Province. Estate sector community organizations also participated in this event. Seeds were exchanged, leaflets were distributed and street drama was performed near the market. More than 1000 were participated in this event in Kandy. The final event of the day held in Mahiyangana with the participation of indigenous leader Vanniyale Eththo and their members. They performed their cultural ritual dance called Kiri Koraha in good wishes for the Caravan. Vanniyale Eththo said that the Seed and Food Sovereignty Caravan is a very important and timely event organized by the people as all our seeds and traditional food verities are vanishing today due to introduction of high yielding hybrid seeds. Thus the food cultures that provided balanced nutritious meals to the people have also vanished reducing the nourishment of the people. Vanniyale Eththo also exchanged seeds with the caravan. He handed over their traditional seed verities to the caravan. More than 1000 people also participated in this event held in Mahiyangana. Street drama performed and leaflets were distributed around Mihiyangana town. Peoples organizations in Uva province had organized the events in Mahiyangana.
