Seeing my father die in horrible suffering changed the way I view - TopicsExpress

Seeing my father die in horrible suffering changed the way I view humanity. I was desperate to take away his pain, but I could do nothing. My heart ached that I let him down in too many ways than I could mentally handle. For years after he passed, I was running through life in fear that I may never live life true to the purpose I am on this earth for, feeling trapped and powerless under oppression, poverty and abuse. Four years after his death, I have peace that I never fathomed I could feel. The shift is in not giving up hope, not giving up on faith, myself, or those around me. We are all in this together, and I wouldn’t be here today without the many people that have opened their hearts and homes to me as we come together for justice and dignity for humanity. I’m eternally grateful to the communities that have shared their stories of struggle, and of resilience from fighting genocides to speaking up against child abuse and neglect. Through journalism, I find myself among 250 students representing 36 nations, speaking more languages than I’ve ever heard. Wondering how life has changed so drastically, it hits me that we have all experienced the same fight for humanity around the world. We have all chosen to not give up. As Lata Jha (I can’t wait to get to know you more!) says, we come together with “The passion and commitment towards proving that journalism still has the power to make a difference.” Columbia University- Master of Science in Journalism- Class of 2015. It begins.
