Seeing this story making the rounds... think its important to point out a few things. thefreethoughtproject/police-confiscate-healthy-baby-born-home/ THERE IS NO LAW AGAINST HAVING BABIES AT HOME, so long as precautions are taken and welfare is checked in a timely manner. I do not see it on Snopes (yet), but I DO see that it is the ONLY story on Google (when you type in something like baby taken after home birth) of its kind. More than likely, this is either a false story OR it is a story of parents who did not understand that there *IS* a law about having a childs welfare checked within a certain period of time after a birth (That is for the safety of the child, and I believe it is a Federal law. Just like it is a Federal law that every American child gets an education.), and they did not appreciate the way it unfolded (which is par for the course in terms of visiting the doctors here - even IF we have made appointments ahead of time, not to mention if we have NOT). As for bills, YES, we have to PAY for our medical care unless we have insurance (whether that is private pay, employer based, or Federally funded Medicare) IF the story is TRUE (it seems pretty far-fetched, I think), they would NOT take the baby because it was born at home. It is NOT illegal to have a baby at home, so long as all the medical matters are ALSO attended to in a timely manner. IF those things are NOT attended to, THEN it becomes a matter for the law - as it would in ANY case that a child seemed to be neglected. And not taking a baby in for a well check for a week MIGHT indicate that, since there are a LOT of things that can be wrong that are not easily apparent. But there is NO LAW against having a baby at home. In ANY state in the Union.
