Seeking advice here. Let’s keep this at the hypothetical, so as not to get into finger-pointing. I was having an early evening bite at a Cole Valley establishment I have patronized and enjoyed for a long time. As I got up to clear my table, one member of the kitchen staff insulted me, saying to his buddy, as best I can translate from the Spanish, “get out of here, you old goat.” It makes a certain sense, since I wear a chin-whisker, but is definitely not a professional comment. I’m not sure I have the whip hand here, first, because I could not confidently identify the staffer to the proprietor, and second because in the old urban truism, the three people you don’t want mad at you are your chef, your tailor, and your stylist. If I continue to patronize the place, I will carry this nugget of anger in with me, at least for a while. If I take my business elsewhere, I shall have let this hijo de la chingada have too much power over my daily life, and more importantly miss the many meetings with friends over coffee and, well, coffee. What would you do?
