Seeking refuge with Allaah when Yawning In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions. As for what follows; Question: When I yawn, be it inside or outside the prayer, should I seek refuge with Allaah from the accursed devil? Sheikh Bin Baaz answers: “As far as I know, there hasn’t been any mention of seeking refuge when yawning. Hence, whoever yawns must suppress it as much as he can and cover his mouth and he shouldn’t make any noises or anything of this manner. Rather he should strive against himself to suppress it and place his hand over his mouth because if he doesn’t do so then he will display a disliked apperance when yawning. Therefore it is befitting for him in this situation to cover his mouth as it has come in the sunnah (prophetic way) of the Messenger, may peace and blessings be upon him, because he commanded (us) with this when he said: “If one of you yawns then he must suppress it as much as he can and let him cover his mouth and he shouldn’t say “haaa” because satan laughs at him.” As for saying “I seek refuge in Allaah from the accursed devil” then we do not know of anything being mention concerning this. However some people do this because they know that yawning is from satan and due to this many laymen say this when they yawn however we do not know of any mention of this in the sunnah. There’s no doubt that yawning is from the accursed devil. Yet it is legislated for the beleiver when he is feeling sluggish or weak where he can be harmed by the enemy of Allaah, i.e. the devil, to seek refuge with Allaah, remember Him much and send prayers and salutations upon the Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him, etc. However (once again) we do not know of anything specific being mentioned concerning this issue… Source: binbaz.org.sa/mat/9414
