Seems the octopus expert is having trouble identifying this octopus I found just north of V. Point on the 14th, These pictures are very interesting. My first instinct is that it is not an Octopus rubescens [East Pacific red octopus]. Something about it just doesn’t seem right, but it’s more of a gestalt thing that I’m basing this on. She suggested that it may be a California Lilliput Octopus, a species that lives in the holdfast of giant kelp, but from my images she couldnt tell the size of the animal. The size of the one I found was much larger than the 2-3cm maximum size of the California Lilliput Octopus. Does anyone have any thoughts on what this might be? Another example of an out of place visitor to the Shores canyon?
