Seen during a walk... Owner has dog off leash and is calling wildly. Fido a large mix breed, is having fun sniffing a bush. Owner is approaching. Fido is retreating (did I see a little grin on Fidos face? I thought so!). Finally, Fido reluctantly meanders back. Owner begins to scold Fido, Bad dog! When I say get back over here I mean it! Next time youre getting a spanking! Now, I ask you gentle dog owners, would you come back to that??? Me neither. The lesson is - always praise your dog when they return to you. If theyve pulled a Fido the praise doesnt have to be effusive. But praise nonetheless. My clients learn the Instant Recall method. It has also been called the catch and release. Briefly, it is one word that, when your dog hears it, means Stop what youre doing and come to me right now. It has saved dogs lives. We turn the recall into a game. Dogs love games!
