Seen in Cinemas: 25-07-2014 - Dawn of the Planet of the Apes I need to start of by saying that I have not seen the original 1968 movie. I have seen the 2001 remake though, and apparently thought it was unremakrable enough to not remember anything beyond the basic concept of the movie. I did watch the previous film of this reboot series, Rise of the Planet of the Apes in the cinema though, and to keep it short, I thought it was a great origins story. Problem with this movie in terms of the overall plot is that you know where it eventually is going to end up, so it cant really suprise you. I felt like a lot of things in this movie needed to be fleshed out more, like for example the viral outbreak and the subsequent war that are merely mentioned, but strangely enough at the same time a lot of the film also seems to drag on too long. Something I noticed is that contrast is something the movie has a heavy focus on. You might have a serene moment, followed by a loud scene immediately afterwards for example. There is a scene where Gary Oldmans character Dreyfus, the leader of the human group, needs to make an entire speech to calm a crowd down. Later, we have a scene with the apes going balistic, where Ceasar just raises his hand and every one of them falls silent- pretty bad ass as well. CGI was terrific, the music was pretty bombastic, and the acting overall was good but unremarkable. Weak ending though. Decent watch overall, but might have been better if Id watched the former movie again before hand.
