Segun Akinlolu a.k.a beautiful nubia wrote, The greatest epidemic sweeping through Africa is not HIV or Malaria, it is the epidemic of greed and selfishness, a twin-headed monster that has turned many of the people into an unkind and unrecognizable caricature of what they, until recently, had been. The crassest form of capitalism and ineffective, poorly borrowed governance/ development models have created several generations of increasingly corrupt minds and an environment in which everyone grabs for himself and cares not if the next person has any hope; a situation in which present consumption is more important than securing and planning for the future. Africas biggest challenge is not material poverty as some will have us believe, it is a poverty of character and workable, home-grown ideas, a deepening dearth of sustainable community development, creative leadership and a constructively conscious public; it is the kind of poverty that ensures that a people never rise out of their lowly state and, thus, continue to be exploited by their internal and external abusers.
