Seining cichlids at Thumbi Island East in Monkey Bay, Malawi, on my first visit to the lake (1968). David Eccles, with whom I had corresponded, kindly put several Fishery Research Unit staff at my disposal (I was barely 18!) for the two days I was at Monkey Bay. Until then, my experience with actual live Malawi cichlids consisted of seeing a few expensive ($40?) Pseudotropheus auratus and Pseudotropheus zebra individuals in aquarium stores. Then, this. WOW! Hundreds of swarming, colorful mbuna and Haplochromis! I was never the same again. Photos © M.K. Oliver
