Seldom do we hear parents saying Beta, this is wrong! Dont do it because it will hurt someone or see how good that made them feel, you should do this more often. What we are told is If you DONT pray, God will punish you, If you wear such clothes, boys will harass you, If you are seen with a boy, the neighbors might tell others, We dont eat that because that is what we have always done. The emphasis always being on fear and hate, on what people will think or do, on what has always happened and what is expected. Hardly ever on what is right and wrong, on what hurts and what makes someone happy, on what is humanitarian and inhuman. Combine this with several taboos and suppressed rebellion and what we have is everyone living 3 lives: 1. What we are to the world 2. What we are at home (with some negotiated liberties) 3. What we actually are
