Selection 2013 What criteria are you using to select the next leaders for the city of Edmonton? Well, one of my criteria for choosing the best candidate for the job of mayor and for my ward councillor will be how transparent are they? One aspect of the transparency is whether they will provide me as a citizen access to information about their campaign donations before I have to vote? "Transparency of campaign contributions is essential to protecting the integrity of democratic processes and ensuring fair elections. Laws requiring the public disclosure of independent political party and campaign contributions ensure that individuals, organisations, interest groups and corporations do not unduly influence a country’s elections or political leadership." transparency-initiative.org Yes, I know the legislation in Alberta does not require disclosure until well after all is said and done in Spring 2014. But my interest lies in seeing whether the candidates understand that the spirit of the law is what resonates. Do they understand that citizens are concerned about financial influence on the state of our democracy and are they willing to be open about the money before election day? Simply speaking if the candidate is not willing to be open about their campaign finance until after I have made my decision and voted, it raises the question what else will they not be willing to disclose during their term?
