Selections! What do selectors actually look for and pay attention to? Actually a good selector will pay attention to a lot of things not just the fancy play that only Looks flashy but has no positive outcome. Firstly - skills: Passing - correctly executed, correct choice of pass for the situation, timing and power of the pass. Catching - 2 hands, strong body driving towards the ball, eyes open, snatching it in to the body to protect it. Attacking - leads and drives towards the ball or area, timing, reading the play, speed in decision making, reactions. Footwork - minimal stepping, good balance and centre of gravity, feet moving and staying agile. Defence - 3 feet, hands defending the pass, contesting the opponent, discipline in staying in play. Just to name a few, secondly - there is strength, power, speed, fitness, attitude, sportsmanship, team work, respect etc etc Thirdly - Then a selector takes into consideration the needs Of the team. For example one would not select 3 holding shooters. There would be no variety in combination changes. Selectors have a lot to take notice of and sometimes this can be difficult when there are 40 odd Kids trialing. Its that time of year when teams are being selected for the 2015 representative season. I hope this is help to someone.
