Selfish Fallout... Today we are looking at a story about a wasteful man. We are examining the prodigal son. We give so little thought about the affect our actions will have on others when we are so self-absorbed. So it is with our story in Luke chapter 15. The son demanded to have his inheritance immediately. He was very selfish in wanting to leave his family for the world. So, the young man never thought about his selfish decision to leave his father and brother and go to enjoy the riches he claimed. Now, the father was wounded because he had no communication with the son, and certainly no physical contact with him. The brother had to do extra work to make up for the loss of the younger brother’s absence. I’m sure there must have been some resentment between the remaining son and the father too. So, the home front was gloomy and rife with problems. Now, look at the wasteful son: He was now alone in the world, and it never occurred to him that no one cared about him like family. Family is so important for us to function properly. That is why the Lord cares about family, and He wants His children to stay together and be strong in the spirit. When you are alone you are in a dangerous position. When you have plenty of money, you can find plenty of friends, but family cares even when you have nothing. We see that when the son came to his senses and made his way home, the father gladly took him into his home. The older son had resentment towards his brother and this is part of the fallout effect. Although it doesn’t say how the rest of the story played out, I think in time things went back to normal. The older son had extra help, the father had his son back and the younger son realized how good home and family can be. There are several lessons we can glean from this story. We should never underestimate the value of what we already have. Things outside the family aren’t always what they seem. Money will run out, but true friends and family won’t. Living life alone is a dangerous way of life. Two really are better than one, and three is even better because there is strength in numbers. And, selfishness always leaves fallout.
