Selma- The Movie. Watch it. Never Forget. I have studied - TopicsExpress

Selma- The Movie. Watch it. Never Forget. I have studied much about the Jewish Holocaust which occurred during WWII. Most of what I have read has been from the perspective of Jewish authors, as I felt it best to try to understand the period through the eyes of the Jewish people. One of the themes I find common among the Jewish people, when referencing the Holocaust, is Never Forget. In fact, some go so far as to say Never forget nor forgive!. Many resent Germans till this very day, some 70 years later. However, Dr. Martin L. King pointed out that, for most Jewish people, Never forget was not merely emotional bosh, but was a perpetual call to action and challenge to their children to excel and to engage in all levels of social and political activism to ensure their people would never again be subject to such an experience. The Jewish people did not succumb to a victim mentality, but used their anger to compel one another to control their own destiny for generations to come. MLK found that to be inspirational. So do I. I went to see the movie, Selma last night.(which meant sitting where I could stand up and sit down as frequently as my back and discomfort demanded) It was intense and at times provoked strong internal emotions. I left the theater thinking to myself Never Forget. However, what I was thinking had nothing to do with rage or bitterness towards white Americans past or present. It instead had to do with the same inspiration many Jewish people- around the world- have had for the past 70 years. History informs us. Seeing the events of Selma played out on the big screen reminded me that a heavy price had been paid for me to have every opportunity to achieve American exceptionalism. I must not forget the price that was paid. I must never fail to be grateful and the best way for me to show my gratitude is to serve others, to engage the political process, to be socially active, to hold myself to high expectations, and to teach the ones coming behind me the valuable lessons of history by lesson and example. Selma is an outstanding film that I highly recommend adding to your collection to watch with your family, church, political group or study group and discuss. (Note: I was pleasantly surprised that the film truthfully depicted President Lyndon B. Johnson for the racist that he truly was!) #NeverForget #Selma https://youtube/watch?v=x6t7vVTxaic
