Selma movie rated 5 ***** and deservingly so. Great performances! The portrayal of LBJ is challenged by those who worked for and with him. The first march took place on March 7, 1965 — Bloody Sunday — when 600 marchers, protesting the death of Jimmie Lee Jackson and ongoing exclusion from the electoral process, were attacked by state and local police with billy clubs and tear gas. I was 17, a senior at Reno High School, it seems like yesterday. The horriffic images and Governor George Wallace are permanently etched in my consciousness. We moved from Reno to Zona in 1989 and I was immediately thoroughly disgusted with the corrupt politics... Evan Mecham governor........ among his bigotted and controversial actions was the cancellation of the states paid Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and creating an unpaid King holiday on a Sunday. He was the first Arizona governor to be impeached. Arizona voters approved the holiday in 1992 after a tourist boycott. At FIB, my boss would conveniently schedule our planning meetings on MLK day. I didnt have the courage of the Selma marchers to walk!
