Selmas director Ava DuVernay is the very first African American - TopicsExpress

Selmas director Ava DuVernay is the very first African American woman to be nominated for an Oscar- a sure bet to win! DuVernay seamlessly recounts Bloody Sunday as citizens sought to march from Selma to Montgomery for their constitutionally given right to vote in Ala. DuVernay offers feminist perspective to the time in which the UNITED STATES FINALLY BECAME A REAL DEMOCRACY - nearly 200 years after the Constitution was written.... All men created equal. She names the women that sought Dr Martin Luther Kings leadership/SCLC when SNCCs efforts failed to end Poll Taxes, vouching (see current GOPs racist/anti poor ID fraud laws) David (Oh-yellow-oh)Oyelowo is the embodiment of Dr. King - as much as I liked Imitation this is Mr. Oyelowos Oscar. Oprahs Annie Lee Cooper is must name all 49 judges before she can register to vote, in Montgomery Diane Nash is devastated by the brutal bombing murder of 4 little girls in church, & galvanizes efforts to bring the brilliant Leadership of Dr King and his inner circle to one of the most horrible places on earth. Carmen Ejogo.(Sparkle) plays Coretta King, a woman that is astoundingly stoic, fearful, and above all protective of her family listening to menacingly abusive calls from whom exactly? Edgar J Hatin Hoovers FBI or the Klan?? Brooklyn Actress Lorraine Toussant (Orange is the New Black) brings activist Annie Boynton Robinson to life- at age103 you can FB her! Nicey Nash (Going On - excellent hospital comedy!) is Jimmie Jacksons mother - a young man that is hunted down and murdered by George Wallaces state troopers for participating in vote organizing. As I pass through ATL (term E?F?)there is a Dr. King exhibit of many of his personal belongings. I am always struck by the slight size of his suits given the caliber of Genius Leadership/Political instincts, commitment to non violence, and unequaled oratory gift.. This was a Big Man, clearly anointed by GOD. President LBJ, despite literary license, fully agreed with the Selma March and worked with Dr King to destroy racist obstructions to Voters. LBJ considered the Civil Rights Voting Act his greatest achievement. In America today - it is no accident that under todays GOP leadership Hi Way 80 site of the Selma - Montgomery March is renamed Jefferson Davis Highway for the President of the Confederacy that championed enslavement of Human Beings. It is no accident that GOP plaintiffs via SCOTUS appointees (Scalia, Roberts, Alito) have gutted the heart of the Civil Rights Voting Act - clearing the path for NEW IMPROVED POLLING TAXES for people of Color and the working poor. It is no accident that from Carolinas - Fla - Mississippi - Texas, etc are shutting down Sunday Voting when Churches in inner cities provide transportation to the poor so they may vote. It is no accident that our own GOP/Teabagger Mayor Ed Braddy is against students (that make GNV/UF their home for 4years of college) voting in elections. If this was indeed a Charitable, Christian and Compassionate nation, not driven by 48% GOP racist, corporatists seeking reinvigorate poverty, this film would be shown in every single Civics class in the America. Wait! The GOPs ALEC has made the study of Civics and Government obsolete in Public school curriculum! Young people NEED to see this film and see the price in human lives and dignity that was paid for this right to vote. We hope that Ms DuVernay wins that Oscar, as does the rest of the nominees. Golden Globes Jan 11th will be the first indication of this films impact. DO NOT MISS THIS FILM!
