Seminoles Seven Year War - Major Francis L. Dade Last March Friends, it was December 28, 1835, when the Florida frontier erupted into one of the fiercest and costliest Indian wars ever waged by the United States. This Seven Years’ war, caused by the unwillingness of a part of the Seminole Indians to emigrate west of the Mississippi, defied some of the efforts of our best U. S. Officers. Major Francis L. Dade, a veteran Indian fighter and soldier with little over a hundred men behind him, marched through Mississippi and into the gaping jaws of the bloody Seminole trap. Congress had appropriated over $30,000,000 to help defeat the Seminoles and some 1,500 U. S. Service men lost their lives. The Indians however, were never beaten
