Senator Johnson will be attending the Pot Luck Picnic this - TopicsExpress

Senator Johnson will be attending the Pot Luck Picnic this Saturday at noon in Elmer Thomas Park. Then at 5pm she will be one of the featured speakers at a forum discussing marijuana legalization. Several other speakers will attend, each with information about different aspects of this topic. If you havent been interested in marijuana laws before, its understandable. We dont really talk about the people who get arrested and go to prison a lot unless we know someone personally affected, and unless we need marijuana for medicine or want it for fun, we dont usually think about it very much. In the past most of our information about it came from after school specials and Just say No! commercials that made it sound like marijuana would make us think we were bees and try to shove ourselves through keyholes. It does not. It is not as harmful as weve been told, and we are also finding that it can help people, like children with epilepsy, people suffering from the side effects of cancer treatments, people with cramps, people who have never really been able to appreciate the Beach Boys album, Pet Sounds. Im only kidding about that last bit. Its hard for people to form opinions on this topic because the way it has been addressed in our public discourse so far has been very dismissive--as if it is not important. As if its a silly topic. I understand why people might feel this way, but its a serious topic that is a part of a whole bunch of other issues were dealing with right now, including immigration--those refugees at Ft. Sill. Also the over crowding of for-profit prisons, healthcare, states rights, violent crime, gun control, the environment, jobs and the economy. All of those things. For me the bottom line is there are people in prison right now for doing something that anyone with the gas money to get to Colorado can do right now without fearing legal repercussions. There are some people who are taken away from their children, their jobs, their schooling, and their homes and held behind bars for doing something that Willy Nelson is notorious and loved for. It is a very serious topic. I hope youll come and listen and speak up, too.
