Republicans, driven by tea party extremists, attempted to use the shutdown and the threat of a catastrophic default to win through extortion what they could not win at the ballot box. They failed. Because President Obama and Democratic leaders stayed strong, and refused to back down. Its a victory for sanity, for America, and for democracy. But with a new fight just a few months away, Democrats will need to stay firm.
