Senior League Match 5 Report Quig Lough was the venue for the 5th - TopicsExpress

Senior League Match 5 Report Quig Lough was the venue for the 5th match in the Senior League last Sunday. Recent weather has been as good as it gets for coarse angling in August, and Sunday was no different with overcast skies and a fresh southerly breeze. Most of the competitors set up feeder and quiver-tip rods, targeting some of Quig Lough’s larger coarse species at range, while some also set up poles, whips and waggler rods for the deep marginal areas that usually produce more consistent bites but from smaller fish. Fishing and feeding a number of areas in your swim is a common approach in match angling, as keeping the bites coming consistently from just one area for 5 hours can be difficult. When the bites dry up from one spot you can change to another one that you have been feeding and usually pick up a few bites from there. The all-in sounded at 11am and the competitors set themselves to the task, some starting with balling-in groundbait and fishing close in, while others choose to build their swim with feeder tactics. Declan did well to secure 3rd place on what can be a tricky swim at the deeper area of Quig Lough, using a mix of tactics to keep the bites coming. Stephen decided to stick it out on the feeder at range for the 5 hours, and the single hour when the Bream did arrive secured him 2nd place. The well-deserved winner on the day was Ciaran, who did a great job in keeping the fish in his swim and catching well throughout the 5 hours. While we were packing up a member of the public arrived to fish. When we went over to say hello and introduce ourselves we found a fine Perch hidden in the undergrowth next to him. Fortunately the fish was still alive and we returned it to the water. Then we attempted to explain that Quig Lough is a catch and release fishery. Coarse species and Pike are natural in our waterways- they are not artificially stocked. Their numbers depend upon a delicate balance that can only be maintained if the angler carefully returns their catch, and Rossmore Coarse Angling Club will continue to promote and protect our valuable fish stocks.
