Senior Management people in Finland have a practice where once a year, they will take a week or two off from their high level job to take on a ground level or simple job way below their pay grade. When asked why, they say its because they want to stay in touch with man on the street and its a personal exercise in humility where they adjust their attitude so that they dont do a menial job and then keep reminding people they are actually rich or famous or powerful. For example the first time I played the Pori Jazz Festival, in 1988 my guide was an Army Colonel. The second time I played Pori Jazz Festival in 2001 my driver was a local Bank Managing Director. Both times after very brief conversations about their actual job they were taking a break from, both gentleman just behaved like friendly, humble helpers and treated is with warmth, respect and humility. Until know, it seems amazing to me and I never forget this.
