Senior Theses today: Dana Olsen: Dana presented her senior thesis on exactly what it meant to live the examined life. She opened with a quotation from Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator, and passages from Luke, Thomas Jefferson, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. In the question and answer section, Dana answered tough questions about how we arrive at the notion of a soul, whether our ideas of joy are communicable to others who do not share in them, and the universality of values necessary for living the good life. Madeline Smith: Madeline opened with a quotation from Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics that explained what it meant to live according to the golden mean. Maddie took us through the differences between the French and American Revolutions, Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, and Melville’s Moby Dick. Along the way, she carefully noted the error in living according to extremes, and that the happy life was to be had in living moderately, rationally, and sensibly.
