It also presents the moon’s closest encounter with Earth for all of 2014. In other words, it’s not just a super moon. It’s the closest super moon of 2014. When the moon is closer in its orbit to the earth, and it happens to be a full moon, then you get a supermoon. A moon that is up to 14 percent larger and up to 30 percent brighter than the average full moon. The moon will technically be full at 7:25 a.m. Saturday. But, it was certainly be big enough for all of us to enjoy Friday night and even Saturday night. This is the third supermoon of the year. There will be a total of five in 2014. The next two will be onAug. 10 and Sept. 9 2014. The August full moon will be the closest full moon this year, with the distance separating the Earth and moon at only 222,000 miles or 355,200 km. About once every 19 years, February has no full moon at all. Moreover, in 7 out of every 19 years, two full moons will fall in the same calendar month. The second of the month’s two full moons is popularly referred to as a Blue Moon. ( Hence the expression Once in a Blue Moon !!!) The next Blue Moon by this definition will happen on July 31, 2015.
