Senzo Meyiwa 1987-2014 life cut short by callous, cowards and wild murderers! South African sport has been struck by one of its most high-profile tragedies ever as hitherto strong-performing acting Bafàna Bafàna captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa. He fell tragic victim to the country’s crime epidemic last night. It has made waves around the world, as you would expect it to, even as South Africans themselves ruefully shake their heads daily in remembrance of the plentiful, less acclaimed victims of domestic murder in their midst. All the killing of a top-tier sportsperson does a little differently is send out a headline-screaming, sobering reminder that absolutely nobody is impervious to one of the worst and most tenacious curses in that country. No, not even a goalkeeper like Senzo, from the ranks of that rare, singular breed of personnel in football who are trusted, by the definition of their difficult, shot-stopping trade, to be impenetrable. You even want to say bulletproof, though his apparent slaying at the hands of a criminal’s bullet to the back slams a horrible lid on that optimistic theory. If there is some minor consolation for this event, deep in peoples angered and sad minds, it is that Orlando Pirates favourite Meyiwa died at a distinguished peak in his personal trade, having led the national team in every Afcon qualifier and standing tall as only ‘keeper on the continent still to be sporting a clean sheet. When the time seems more apt, Bafana Bafàna must resume their revivalist spirit, and they should and almost certainly will do it with special, motivational cognisance of their slain leader and brave man between the proverbial sticks. What is sickening is seeing internet trolls taking to social media to abuse his girlfriend, musician Kelly Khumalo, accusing her of destroying Meyiwas family and being responsible for his death. You wonder why normal people will deviate from this tragedy and focus on a private life of another human being. Its clear from police, witnesses and Kelly herself that this was robbery gone wrong and for vile trolls to twist such a misfortune and blame the musician is sickening. This is the trouble with the internet, an unregulated jungle, sadly where every Jack and Jill have the power to spit vernon attacking and abusing innocent people, willy nilly. Having a name and being a celebrate is not a passport for one to be abused and called all sorts of names. What has someones private life have to do with such evil act of barbarism? People are mourning the death of one of the finest African goalkeepers, a legend of South African football, a father and family man but idiots only focus on negatives and have no respect for the departed. So much insensitivity these days, people tend to focus on peoples private lives more when tragedies happen to well known people. South African people should focus more on how they can eradicate crime, find the root causes of all this madness than the blame game which is not reducing the crime rate. At the moment get those thugs who took someones life in cold blood, put them in prison for good and leave Senzos family to mourn him in peace. The gun culture and robberies in South Africa have for many years put the country as the crime capital of the world. For a country which is not at war, to have so many gun murders is shocking to say the least. South African government should put more programmes on educating its citizens and engaging the communities so as to stop this sick fashionable culture of killing innocent people during armed robberies. Football fans around the world including me will miss this promising rare talent, the jovial and charismatic Orlando Pirates & Bafana Bafàna goal minder Senzo Menyiwa. He was pencilled to be one of the greatest goalkeepers of our generation and his life has been cut short by animals who deserve to rot in hell. RIP Senzo!!!
