Separate time zone for NE Gogoi fighting a losing battle Assam Tribune | Kalyan Barooah Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi may have in a belated realisation, revived the debate for a separate time zone for the North-east, but his latest advocacy may fall flat, because a gain of half an hour for the Eastern Region may lead to loss of equal numbers of hours in the Central and Western Regions. A top official of the Ministry of Science and Technology told this newspaper that the Centre had not once, but twice turned down the demand – way back in 2001 and 2007. An expert committee appointed by the Government of India in 2001 had recommended to the Department of Science and Technology that there was no need for a different time zone for the North-east.
